Detailed designs. Flexible quantities.

Direct-to-film (DTF) transfers use heat and pressure to apply your design to compatible apparel. DTF is a durable option for vibrant, full-color artwork, fine details and gradients, with no minimum order quantity.

Small orders & one-offs

DTF is a practical choice for a single custom shirt, a short run of apparel, or a project that does not meet our 24-piece screen-printing minimum. It also works well for detailed designs with many colors.

Business, school & club apparel

Create apparel for a business, team, school activity or UCR club or organization. We’ll review your artwork and garments to help you choose between DTF, screen printing and embroidery.

DTF or screen printing?

For larger quantities using the same design, screen printing is generally the most cost-effective choice. DTF is strong when you need smaller quantities or lots of colors and fine details. Garment type, artwork, placement and quantity help determine which approach makes sense for your project.

For a premium, dimensional stitched finish, especially on professional polos, hats and jackets, consider embroidery.

Garments, placement & care

Material and garment compatibility are reviewed for each project. Send your artwork, garment details or photos, quantity, decoration locations and deadline. Customer-supplied garments are subject to review and an additional fee. Follow the care guidance provided for your finished apparel to help preserve the decoration.

Heat transfer vinyl (HTV) is also available for suitable projects. Ask us which decoration method best fits your design and garment.

Questions before you order

What does DTF mean?

DTF stands for direct-to-film. The design is transferred onto compatible apparel using heat and pressure. It is a printing option for full-color artwork rather than a stitched decoration.

Is DTF a good choice for a single shirt?

Yes. Joy Embroidery has no minimum quantity for DTF. It is also useful for short runs that do not meet our screen-printing minimum. Share the garment and design so we can confirm suitability.

How does DTF feel compared with screen printing?

DTF sits on the fabric surface. Feel depends on the design coverage, size and garment; a large solid design can feel different from small, separated details. Screen-printing feel also varies with the artwork, fabric and ink application. Tell us if a light feel is a priority.

Does DTF work on every material?

Material compatibility still needs review. Heat-sensitive items, coatings and some garment constructions can limit decoration options. Send the garment details or photos, especially for customer-supplied items. Follow the care guidance for the finished apparel.
